Hurtling through Iowa City, Iowa, early on a June morning in 1966, Train 8, the Rocky Mountain Rocket, is running about five hours late behind E6A 631 and an unidentified second unit. Normally its schedule would have put it here in pre-dawn darkness, but the flock of head-end cars suggests that Rock’s mind is no longer on its passengers, who are making do without a diner or sleepers. Familiar with the Rocket on the western end of its run, I was taken by surprise by its tardy appearance here in Iowa City and didn’t recognize it. I am indebted to Greg Stout, author of “Route of the Rockets,” for identifying this train for me.
