The Green Bay and Western’s train from Winona rolls through Independence, Wisconsin, on a beautiful August morning. My friends and I learned an important lesson that day – don’t visit Wisconsin without a hotel reservation on the weekend of the Oshkosh experimental aircraft fly-in. We ended up in Green Bay and found that there were no rooms to be had in a 200-mile radius. The manager of the McDonald’s in New London heard us talking about our dilemma, and offered to let us sleep in the car in his parking lot and wash up when he opened at 6:00 the next morning.
