      Remarks & Notes
Still Santa Fe’s elegant flagship and one of the last of the great passenger trains in February, 1969, the Super Chief, Train 18, slows for a meet with a unit coal train just south of Glorieta, New Mexico. The image is there: The pair of FP45s up front wear GM stylist Leland Knickerbocker’s distinctive Warbonnet scheme and trail an off-season consist of Hi-Level chair cars and diner, Pleasure Dome lounge, and sleepers, all probably sold out, plus baggage car and baggage-dormitory for the crew. So it will be until May 1, 1971 when Amtrak takes over and service starts to slide downhill. Near this spot in March, 1862, a Union force from Colorado met and turned back a force of Texans sent to capture Colorado and its gold and silver mines for the Confederacy and to detach from the Union the entire West as far as he Pacific ocean.

The Santa Fe's warbonnet paint scheme on passenger diesel locomotives was one of the most iconic in railroading. It appealed to travelers and modellers alike, and helped brand Santa Fe all the way from Chicago to California and Texas.
