San Diego's Metropolitan Transit System is the oldest of the "second generation" light rail systems in the United States, having begun service on July 26, 1981. A little over thirty years after "The Trolley" began operating, Siemens Duewag U2 car 1059, operating on the Blue Line to the US-México border, approaches San Diego's Amtrak station on December 4th, 2011.
