| A southbound Union Pacific manifest is about to begin the hard work of crossing southern California's Tehachapi Mountains as it enters the first curve since departing Bakersfield 15 miles earlier. For the next 35 miles the curves become nearly constant and the grade steepens until the summit is reached at the town of Tehachapi. A trio of ES44ACs (8006, 7353 and 7345) are on the headend, and near the end of the train are three more (7362, 5430 and 8056). The severity of the grade can even be seen in the citrus grove in the distance. |
