The Norfolk and Western acquired the bankrupt Atlantic and Danville in 1962 and renamed it Norfolk, Franklin and Danville. For a long time the NFD operated with two former Atlantic and Danville RS36s (#1-#2) and four former N&W/Nickel Plate RS11s (#201-#204). By 1980, RS36 #2 was all that was left of the Alcos and was augmented with N&W locomotives. Here are N&W GP9 #655 and NFD RS36 #2 on a freight near Suffolk, Virginia.
i was born in virginia in 1972. when i think of railroads that shaped the commonwealth. i think of railroads like, SCL, N&W and southern. this is a tribute to those wonderful days gone by and for those who remember it well.
this album chronicles the old railroads of my home region of southeastern virginia. from the 1950s to the 1990. it includes many of the fallen flags, regional shortlines and current railroads that grew and helped the region become one of the most importan
