A day late for Christmas but on December 26,1965 Extra 72 West is still a surprise gift to the photographer, a rare 15,000-hp DD35A/GP30/GP30B/DD35 combination, as it pops out from under the C&S overpass at the west end of Cheyenne yards. The lead unit is only a few months old, one of an order of 15 A-units that, uniquely, came only after UP acquired 27 booster versions of the big 5,000-hp double diesels. The GP30B is also unique. Of the 900-plus GP30s produced by EMD only 40 were B-units; all went to UP.
