| As I snowshoed through this winter wonderland, I began to think of the Donner Party. The inhospitable temperatures and constant snow storms made them legends in American history. Cold storms brewing in the Sierra Nevada Mountains are a common sight this time of year. As I crested Schallenberger Ridge, I could see a cold winter storm approaching.
It is the job of the Union Pacific Railroad to battle these winter storms. Donner Pass is a main corridor for freight trains coming in and out of Northern California. It is extremely important to keep this line open and keep the trains rolling. In this shot, Union Pacific 6478 hustles a grain train along Donner Lake as it heads east towards Truckee. |
