A pair of Bessemer & Lake Erie F7’s has left its train and are off to pick up more loaded hoppers at Liggett, Pennsylvania. With its 4:00 call time, the Kaylor branch local, one of the last regular-service strongholds for EMD cab units, only had a few hours of daylight as it serviced the mines along its 21 mile journey to the B&LA main line at Queen Junction. Making it even more difficult to record, it was frequently annulled during summer months, when the days were longest, but coal traffic was low.
Amazingly, the pair of F’s, B&LE 728 and 727, survives intact, albeit neglected, on the Southern Railroad of New Jersey. Here is Kevin Andrusia’s view of them in 2014.
