Recently, BNSF Railway has brought back many of their older locomotives out of storage to help with high volume of grain trains expected this fall in the Midwest. As a result, some of these stored units have found their way into the Southwest. Racing down Route 66 at 65 MPH, BNSF 1006 hustles a loaded auto train for San Bernardino, CA. BNSF 1006 was one of BNSF's first GE Dash-9 44CW locomotives to sport the BNSF paint scheme after the merge of the Burlington Northern Railroad and the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway in 1996. The green & orange paint scheme resembles that of the former Great Northern Railway, later Burlington Northern. Known as "goat boats", the paint schemes shows off the heritage of the once great GN. The nickname of these units ties back with the Great Northern and their promoting of their railroad with photos of Rocky Mountain goats.
