Carrying a Torch for Utah

After participating in the Olympic Torch Relay for the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia, the Union Pacific refurbished their "cauldron car" for use on the Olympic Torch Relay train heading to the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 2002. This unique car, seen in Seacliff, California, as the train headed up the Pacific Coast, brought up the rear of the 19-car special train, carrying the Olympic flame in its cauldron. The train traveled more than 3,200 miles through 11 states; one of 10 modes of transportation that included dogsled, horse-drawn sleigh and covered wagon - and, of course, being carried by runners. After the Games concluded, this car was donated to the Utah State Railroad Museum in Ogden. (Click HERE for a photo of the head-end of this train...)
