The "Wienermobile" Visits Fullerton

On a gloomy day in August, a United Aircraft TurboTrain accelerated out of Fullerton, California, as it headed to San Diego. Built by United Aircraft's Sikorsky Aircraft Division, this train set toured much of the United States in conjunction with Amtrak. Built for the US Department of Transportation in 1967, these three-car sets carried 144 people and operated at a maximum speed of 100 miles per hour (160 km/h). Amtrak eventually purchased some of these UA TurboTrains (as did Canadian National), but they rarely saw service outside of the New York NY to Boston MA corridor.
