      Remarks & Notes
      Steam and Steel

... but it also takes a human to make a locomotive come "alive" and do what it was designed to do. As steam swirls around and through the cab on a cool and moist morning, the engineer of Wiscasset, Waterville & Farmington 0-4-4 #9 prepares his machine for the first passenger run of the day. Shortly, the engineer will move his locomotive to get it loaded with coal, pick up its two-car train, and then position it under the water tank so his fireman can fill the tank with water to boil.
