Conrail’s Allentown Local to Washington, New Jersey, WJAL-18, enters the former Lackawanna Phillipsburg Branch from the ex-Jersey Central main line at Phillipsburg, New Jersey. This local was about the only train to use the CNJ over the Delaware River at this time. Mainline traffic to eastern New Jersey used the parallel ex-Lehigh Valley bridge until a later inspection revealed deterioration, leading to a rerouting over the CNJ span. The dormant CNJ main, still with bladeless semaphores “protecting” the junction with the DL&W, can be seen to the left of the locomotives, while a portion of a signal bridge over the Lehigh Valley main is in the upper left.
