In the 1980’s, the Norfolk Southern overhauled four Southern FP7’s for utility service as part of its steam program. Painted in the Southern’s green passenger scheme, the four-axle passenger units were used as helpers for smaller steamers like Savannah and Atlanta 750, as well as to haul certain excursions on their own. The resurrection of N&W 2-6-6-4 1218 created another operational need for the FP7’s, due to the limited turning facilities for such a long locomotive. Here three of the cab units bring the southbound leg of an Alexandria – Charlottesville excursion through Catlett, Virginia. The 1218 is simultaneously coming north on a ferry move, and will meet the excursion in Charlottesville and will take it back north to Alexandria.
