        Remarks & Notes
        Baby Boat

In 1975, the Maine Central went shopping for its first new power in nine years, and chose ten of GE’s U18B “baby boats”. With their unique 8-cylinder FDL engines, they provided much better fuel economy than the GP38’s that were the MEC’s previous new power. Caught in bicentennial fever of the mid[1970’s, the MEC dubbed the baby boats as the “Independence Class” with each locomotive named after a Revolutionary War New England patriot or concept. Here , number 407, Unity, is on the point of a train entering Rigby Yard in Portland, Maine.
