      Remarks & Notes
      Rensselaer, NY - 1/26/17

Only eight GP40TC diesels were built by GMD (EMD's Canadian division), originally Canadian National 600-607. One of two variants of passenger-equipped GP40s, the GP40TC was constructed on an "SD" frame to allow space for an early version of Head End Power, which provided for lighting, heating and air conditioning in the passenger cars (rather than steam heat, as in the GP40P diesels built for the Central Railroad of New Jersey two years later). Assigned to the Government of Ontario Transit, these engine were later sold to GO Transit as, in this case, GOT 600, GOT 9800 and then GOT 500 before it (and the other seven) were sold to Amtrak (as, first, AMTK 192 before being rebuilt into a "GP38H-3" numbered 520). Photographed on railroad property with permission and full PPE.
