Two feet to the quarries. Maine's 6-mile Monson Railroad existed primarily to move slate from quarries in the Monson area to a connection with the Bangor & Aroostook Railroad, where it could be transported to market by standard gauge rail. The Monson railroad had mostly flatcars for rolling stock and had no turning facilities for the locomotives. The train you see here utilizing Monson #3 along with a couple of flats and a coach is pretty typical of what their trains would have looked like. This re-creation of Monson operations was conducted by the volunteers of the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Company & Museum, on the grounds of the WW&F Museum, in Alna, Maine.
