A Harrisburg train has arrived at 30t Street Station in Philadelphia, and the hostlers are taking the GG1 to the Race Street engine terminal. I’m not sure what the crewman is looking for, but he is leaning as far out of the big electric as far he can. The E60 seen as an SW1 moved in to take the cars for servicing is now in the engine terminal.
Soon after this photo, my D.C.-bound train arrived from New York, and I took a seat on an Amfleet coach. In those days, anyone could go downstairs to the platforms when a train was due. In my car a grandmother had come aboard the train to see her kids and grandkids off on their journey. The engineer was obviously very experienced, and we quietly glided away without a hint of movement. As we popped into daylight from under the Philadelphia post office, panic ensued as the family realized that Grandma could not get off of the train. After much discussion with the conductor, the family accepted that Grandma was taking a free trip to Wilmington, and would have to buy a ticket to return to Philly.
