Golden Hills in the Golden State

Amtrak's Coast Starlight is famed for its views of the Pacific Ocean. But even though the old Southern Pacific mainline veers inland a bit at San Luis Obispo, the scenery is remains attractive. After crossing the Coast Range mountains just north of SLO, southbound train #11 has already made its station stop in this central coast town, home to Cal Poly University. A pair of F40PH locomotives, led by 398, threads their ten-car train (which includes a pair of old Santa Fe Hi-Level cars) through the verdant foothills as the train heads to Los Angeles. Just ahead, though, this train passes through Price Canyon and then skirts the Pacific Ocean at Pismo Beach (clams!), along the edge of Vandenberg Air Force Base (rockets!) and then the spectacular ocean views continue on through Santa Barbara (celebrities!) to Ventura (agriculture!), where the line turns inland again.
