      The empty westbound Delaware & Hudson “salt train” breaks into the sun at Canisteo, New York. This was a dedicated train that would run to the salt mine at Retsof, New York on the Genesee and Wyoming. When the D&H bought nine rebuilt ex-Reading and ex-Erie Lackawanna C424’s, the G&W provided financing for three of them, in order to ensure that fresh power was always available for the salt train. Here a newly-delivered unit leads two of the G&W Alcos that have been in service for a few months.
