Old vs. New. UP 9000 is one of the most unique engines at the museum. It was the first of the class to be built, the last to be retired, and is the sole survivor. It was one of the first pieces the museum acquired in May of 1956 and came in powered under steam with only a caboose in tow. It is also one of only four surviving 3-cylinder engines, another of which resides at this museum, SP 5021. While UP 9000 was built in 1926, its yellow friend on the other track, UP 3105, was built in 1979, over 50 years later. UP 3105 is the most recent acquisition for the museum arriving in February of 2014 as a trade for the Big Boy 4014 along with a boxcar and caboose.
