Remarks & Notes

Cement Wall southbound. From up on the rocks above track level, we see our Silverton Mixed charging southbound around the curve at MP 476.5 at the location known as "Cement Wall." This bend in the Animas River has been particularly prone to washouts over the years and in 1970, just prior to the sale of the Silverton Branch, the D&RGW chose to shore up this location by constructing a very stout concrete wall. Clearly, that little piece of engineering has held up well in the ensuing 45 years.
