Old and New. SCAX 883, an F59PHI built by EMD in 1995 meets its new counterpart and ultimately replacement, SCAX 910, an EMD F125 testing on the San Bernardino Line. Once the tier 4-compliant F125s complete testing, Metrolink will begin placing them in service and phase out the F59PHs and PHIs.
Tier IV locomotives are the safest, cleanest, and most fuel efficient locomotives on the rails today. Unfortunately, most of them are ugly and are as quiet as an ACS-64.
