    Remarks & Notes
    Third time’s the charm
The Auburn Depot has seen an interesting life since its conception shortly after the railroad built through here in the mid-1800s. The first depot was constructed in the late 1840s but succumbed to fire at the hands of Union forces during the Civil War in 1864. The second depot was completed in 1870 but again fell to fire in 1904, this time due to a lightning strike. The third version of the depot seen today was designed in 1904 by then 21-year-old Architecture student Ralph Dudley and opened in 1905. It welcomed many a students and travelers to the ‘loveliest village on the plains’ for nearly 65 years until the final passenger train came through in 1970. Later years saw the depot used by private businesses until it was abandoned by them in 2003. For over a decade it stood vacant until it was given a new lease on life by being converted into a fine dining restaurant which reopened it to the public in the fall of 2015. This evening it’s almost closing time at the highly acclaimed restaurant, as the empty auto rack train Q282 passes it by. To see how much the Depot has changed, click here.
