On a chilly Thanksgiving morning in 1986, Santa Fe 9523 East, a hot 991 train, kicks up dust as it hustles past the Dupont chemical plant in east Antioch, CA. This symbol kept a blistering schedule between Richmond and Chicago, covering the distance in 56 hours. The only train faster was its counterpart, the 199.
