100 years before, the swiss engineer Jakob Buchli invented the "Buchli drive", a transmission system used in electric locomotives. The drive is a fully spring-loaded drive, in which each floating axle has an individual motor, that is placed in the spring mounted locomotive frame. The weight of the driving motors is completely disconnected from the driving wheels, which are exposed to movement of the rails. In Switzerland, this system was used for about 240 locomotives in the 1920/1930', and exported to several other countries too. In the USA, the Pennsylvania Railroad O1b # 7854 and # 7855 from 1931 used this drive. Ae 3/6 I # 10664 of SBB Historic was built in 1926 by SLM and BBC and is based at Rapperswil.
