San Luis Central GE 70-ton No. 71 sits in the railroad’s small yard at Sugar Junction just east of Monte Vista, Colorado, on September 1, 2013. This locomotive was bought by SLC in 1955 and replaced the short lines only steam locomotive, a 1913 Baldwin 2-8-0 named “Little Nell” that first operated on the railroad in January 1914. Both locomotives were purchased new, serving the railroad admirably for over 100 years!
