Built Like a Mack Truck

That phrase was very much a part of the fabric of Allentown, Pennsylvania, home of the world headquarters of Mack Trucks. Although I grew up about twenty miles from Allentown, I was well aware of the pride in being the home of the industry leader. After the acquisition of Mack by Renault, reorganizations and cost-cutting measures caused the pride to turn to resentment, I once saw a cartoon of a poodle doing unspeakable things to a bulldog, pretty much summing up how long-time employees viewed the new management. Although the main assembly plant is still in the Lehigh Valley, I was taken back when I saw a building with a sign proclaiming it to be Mack Trucks’ World Headquarters along Interstate 40 in Greensboro, North Carolina, about an hour from my current residence. Here in better days, a load of cabs from another plant arrives in Allentown.
