          Remarks & Notes
New York, Chicago & St. Louis Railroad (the Nickel Plate Road) No.514 Owners: New York, Chicago & St. Louis Railroad #514; Norfolk & Western Railway #2514; Norfolk Southern #2514. Builder: Electro-Motive Division, General Motors Corporation, La Grange, IL, 1958.

NKP No. 514, built toward the end of GP-9 production, helped put the final nail in the steam locomotive coffin of its employer. Ironically, one of those famed Berkshires, No. 759, is a roundhouse neighbor of No. 514. After successor Norfolk Southern had no longer a need for it, No. 514 came to Steamtown in 1985 in part of a deal that gave the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke, Virginia clear title of former Steamtown locomotive N&W Class A No. 1218. (I do like No. 514 a lot but VTM clearly got the better deal.)

Seen here is the long hood before being reunited with the body that has seen a ground-up restoration of the locomotive. It should be great for another couple of decades of solid, reliable service.
