University encroachment is slowly chipping away the city of Harrisonburg and the Chesapeake Western's Yard. At one point the now fenced lot was the home of a shoe factory and an additional siding for CW to drop box cars of materials. Now James Madison University is using it as a temporary parking lot and has fenced off the lot making this once easily accessed and unobstructed view of CW's yard a little more challenging. Word had it that the NS heritage loco, NKP 8100, had made its second trip back to this CW this year. So I dropped by and found the colorful addition to the drab black & white resting in the evening sun. Since I had no step ladder nor drone, I amused the summer students nearby, by climbing on top of my van and collecting this shot from its roof top. While just another CW yard shoot, the extra effort was worth it to add a little color to my collection.
Solely the CW Past and Present.
July 5, 1895 CW moved its first load of freight and although its existence is merely on paper today, its roots run deep. 130 years and still moving freight. The CW operates as a subsidiary of Norfolk Southern.
