      Remarks & Notes
Colorado’s San Luis Valley is a huge high-altitude (average 7,664 feet above sea level) valley that is approximately 122 miles long and 74 miles wide with some of it used for grazing and growing crops. An amazing amount of potatoes, lettuce, barley and other crops are raised, as well as alfalfa and grass hay used for livestock. San Luis & Rio Grande wanted to capitalize on some of the hay that is trucked out of the valley and delivered out of state. A 89-foot flatcar (FEC No. 3332) was equipped with bulkhead ends, and the car loaded with hay. As anyone knows that has followed a pickup truck loaded with hay, it’s a pretty unstable load. No matter how many tie downs the railroad used, it couldn’t secure the shifty load. As far as I know, the experiment ended with this load of hay sitting in the yard at Alamosa, Colorado, on May 28, 2007.

Flat cars are often loaded with very common ladings, but they can sometimes be more impressive!

A compilation of DRGW's La Veta Pass route to the San Luis Valley now operated by the SLRG. With Rio Grande Scenic passenger operations coming to a close in 2019, the Alamosa sub is once again freight-only, as reflected here.
