| Buried deep in the Cumberland Mountains in the western tip of Virginia is the Hagan Switchback. This area is a remote section of the CSXT Cumberland Valley Sub between Loyall and Big Stone Gap. Here trains have to maneuver from a north-south main to an east-west main via a switchback.
This morning we have a 110 car Terrell coal train is now heading east all done with the switchback maneuver. Manned helpers on the rear end had to help this train thru the switchback. They made a cut on the train and doubled towards a track to allow them to get over the south switchback switch. Once they helpers were pointed towards the connection track, the train is put back together and then move west thru the switchback (track on the left). Both switches are radio remote controlled in the switchbacks, and the train gained 102 feet with this move. The move lasted only about 30 minutes from arriving south, to heading east. Pretty interesting move for a class 1 coal train in 2019! As you can see the air shots help see the move better cause alot of this area is in a Forrest. |
