The leviathan sleeps. With sunset coming in less than half an hour, UP Locomotive #4014 has been bedded down for the night. Her fire has been killed and all appliances shut down. The roar of the atomizer, the whine of the dynamo and the soft hissing of steam that were present just a couple of hours prior are gone now and so is the crew....off the clock and into official crew rest. Although she looks cold and dead, that's hardly the case. Like a big Thermos bottle, she holds an incredible amount of heat energy inside. Well before dawn tomorrow, her crew will return and re-light her firebox. With the fire lit and a dose of blower, she'll come back up to working pressure in a couple of hours and her mighty "pulse" will return. But for now, in the silence of the sunset, let us take a few moments to just marvel at the workings of this 600-ton, "Swiss Watch."
