Heading west out of Victorville, California, Union Pacific 4-8-8-4 4014 meets an eastbound UP freight at Frost, the location of the Santa Fe’s “natural crossover.” This spot is where trains heading west cross over the eastbound line in order to run left-handed over Cajon Pass, roughly 10 miles ahead, in order to take advantage of better grades over the mountains. The steam special is about to cross over the freight as it makes its way to West Colton Yard in Bloomington, California, on October 9, 2019.
