In the railroading industry, especially on the short line side, the ability to improvise & adapt to changes in the plan are a necessity. A couple of Pickens employees had arrived at the Vulcan Quarry just after I did to pick up the Backhoe seen here & pick up where they left off on their Maintenance-of-Way work, only to discover that the battery was dead. Knowing that the old company truck they had likely wouldn't have enough punch to jump start it & knowing the train was real close, they decided to call the crew to ask if they could utilize the much stronger batteries they had on the U-Boats to jump start it. After spending several minutes to find jumper cables, it didn't take long to get the Backhoe going again.
