The 35 meter high and 137 meter long Schmittentobel Viaduct was built with limestones for the Albula line of the Rhaetian Railway and opened in 1903. In the summer of 2020 it was extensively renovated and refurbished. The same construction method was used as previously for various other bridges of the Rhaetian Railway. For the time being, the track was laid on auxiliary bridges and the vaults underneath were repaired and sealed. The track bed was widened on both sides for higher security, so that it is hardly visible after completion. At the piers, the masonry was renovated and re-grouted. Only a few days before this photo, the work was completed and the framework removed. Now the driver training steamtrain with 2-8-0 "Consolidation" G 4/5 # 107 "ALBULA", built in 1906 by the SLM, is crossing the "new" viaduct between Alvaneu and Filisur. The train ran from Landquart via Chur-Thusis-Tiefencastel to Filisur and back this day.
