Poor 'ole Belle Mead StationBuilt by the Reading Railroad in 1919, this station replaced an older three-story station (seen here) which was built in the late 1870's which was located just southwest. Today, the station sits abandoned and forlorn, declared by "Preservation New Jersey" one of the most endangered buildings in the state. The station last saw passenger service in 1982. Today, this station only sees freight trains from CSX running between Philadelphia, PA and central north New Jersey on its Trenton subdivision.
A report issued by NJ Transit in November 2007 suggested re-opening the line would be economically feasible, but not a "no-brainer". One of the concerns is that rail commuters who currently use other lines would merely shift to the West Trenton Line, thereby bringing in no additional revenue. Fourteen years later, hope springs eternal.
