An eastbound Santa Fe freight circumnavigates the famed Tehachapi Loop as it climbs out of California’s San Joaquin Valley and up into the Mojave Desert. ATSF U36C 8716 leads this train, followed by ATSF SD26 4665 (a rebuilt SD24) and leased Norfolk & Western SD40-2 6100. On the other side of the hill, in the center of the Loop, this train will cross over itself. (Walong, California – September 4, 1978)
