Comstock Dawn - Golden light at Gold Hill. Just minutes after sunrise, V&T Locomotive #29 and her short freight leave the wide-open spaces of American Flat behind and enter the hillside mining community of Gold Hill. In the distance are the rugged, snow-covered peaks of the High Sierra. The train is passing the Overman Pit, an open pit mine which was excavated after the original V&T Virginia City Branch was dismantled in 1941. This location is at about MP 49.4. From here, the 2.2% average grade relaxes for just about half a mile as the railroad crosses the Crown Point Fill, reaching Gold Hill Depot at MP 50.1, where the steep grades of the final climb to Virginia City begin in earnest.
