Normally passing through the bustling downtown area of Santa Barbara a little after sunset on day two (the final day) of its journey to Los Angeles, a horrific winter storm in the Pacific Northwest has delayed this edition of the southbound Coast Starlight more than 16 hours - placing it at the original 1902-built, Southern Pacific station here at Santa Barbara in the morning light on day three on its trip. Passing through the bay area during the dead of night, the train rolled into San Luis Obispo (SLO) at dawn. With the decision made to run southbound Pacific Surfliner 774 ahead of it out of SLO, the Starlight was forced to run "on color" for most of the remainder of its trip as it repeatedly caught up to the shorter train that makes more stops at smaller communities along the coast. This train was so late, it would go on to meet its northbound counterpart at Camarillo...a meeting that hasn't happened in Southern California since the last day of daily operations in 2020.
