In 1973, you rarely had to wait long to see railroad action in Opelika. There were lots of local rail customers, Southern and Western Railway of Alabama interchanged daily, and a Southern branch to Roanoke had service six days a week. Today, virtually all of that is gone, and most trains just zip through town, only slowing if they get stabbed at the CSX/NS crossing-at-grade.
