| The NRG Will County Generating Station in Romeoville, IL opened in 1963 and has been coal fired since that time. With coal deliveries from the Union Pacific, the plant has two 1959-built SD20's assigned to unload the coal. Late in 2021, it was announced that the Romeoville plant and sister Waukegan plant would be closed in June 2022. I suppose time will tell how much truth there is to that announcement. The plant's two SD20's can be seen to the right. The plant is in the process of unloading a train of coal and there's another train in the staging yard that has yet to be unloaded. The Sanitary & Ship Canal can be seen to the left. |
