One of the quintessential photos of the Delaware & Hudson Railroad is this view of a northbound train rolling under the Starrucca Viaduct in Lanesboro, Pennsylvania. I only shot this once before the Penn Division was severed as a through route The Instamatic camera that I was using did not have the lens or the shutter speed to capture the three lightning-stripe C628’s barreling around the curve in a manner sufficient to submit here. Eleven years after that interlude, the Belden Hill tunnel enlargement project gave the remaining part of the Penn Division a chance to host every movement between Binghamton and the north. While the entire detour was full of unusual photo opportunities, the shot under Starrucca was mandatory. The double-mast signals that once stood have been removed, and the ex-PC/Conrail U33C is a recent roster addition, but the sight of a train coming under the stone viaduct still has the same classic feel.
