Quite a few steam locomotive enthusiasts refer to the Bavarian four-cylinder express train locomotives S 3/6 as the most beautiful machines ever built. The 4-6-2 locomotive # 3673 was built in 1918 in the series "S 3/6 i" by J.A.Maffei for the "K?niglich Bayerische Staatsbahn" and got the number 18 # 478 of the Deutsche Reichsbahn. The locomotive was rescued by the swiss gentleman Serge Lory and was in Switzerland from 1966 til 1993. Now owned and operated by the BEM (Bayerisches Eisenbahnmuseum N?rdlingen). The locomotive is moving backwards from the 20 meter diameter turntable in the Bahnbetriebswerk N?rdlingen to pull the 10.20 AM train to Wassertrüdingen and back. Loc and tender have a wheeelbase of 18,44 meter. The 01 series express train steamlocomotive like the 01 # 066 and the 01 # 180 of the Bavarian Railway Museum have a wheelbase of 20,32 meter and are not able to be turned here. They are stabled in a rectangular shed and not in the roundhouse.
