    Remarks & Notes
For a few days the usual SD70 pair for the gas local was broken up as #4408 was taken offline and replaced with #253, an SD40. This was a rare opportunity to see a conventional cab leader back on this turn. A side effect was a few less horsepower, causing the turn to regularly take the MRL 4th sub when going west due to the lesser grade. With microbursts popping up I thought I was going to miss out on a shot of the gas local with this unusual leader. To add to that, the train sat at a red signal at Superior, 14 miles to the east for an unknown reason. As I waited at St Regis, MT on the remains of the Milwaukee Road trestle over the Clark Fork River in pouring rain I heard the dispatcher start moving traffic again. The rain tapered off, and magically a hole in the clouds opened up. Within minutes the gas local came around the curve as a double rainbow filled the big Montana sky.

Landscape photography is difficult due to the challenge of combining good light and good scenery. Good railroad photography enters another level of complexity since it requires the first two while there is a train in view.

Some of the most spectacular photos of trains are in the worst weather. Here's some outstanding work by photographers who braved the elements!
