Hammering through Oblivion. The Black Hills Central Railroad's two saddle-tank, articulated, compound Mallet Locomotives combine forces in a smoky run-by for photographers as part of the line's 65th anniversary celebration on Saturday August 20th, 2022. In this view, the train is passing the old narrow gauge wye at the site of the historic logging hamlet known as "Oblivion", around Mile Marker 4.4. The smoke you see is mostly for the cameras. With a 7-car passenger train, the 75,000 lb. combined tractive effort of #s 110 and 108 is overkill, even on this steep grade. Either engine alone can easily handle the train. Normally, when the train comes through here, it will just produce a light grey plume.
