| A loaded Thunderbird mine shuttle is seen heading to the Fairlane plant at Iron Junction. The shuttles operate on a four-hour cycle, bringing raw ore from the mine at Thunderbird in Virginia to the United Taconite plant at Forbes. This plant is also known as Fairlane, and both facilities were named after Ford automobiles as Ford Motor Company was the original owner. There is no taconite plant at Thunderbird, so the ore must be moved off-site to the Fairlane facility. A pair of standard cab Dash 8s is the usual power however CN has tentative plans to replace these units with more modern locomotives. |
