In the 1980s, the development of high-power output diesel locomotives was yet to meet the rapid growth of freight train demand. China decided to import locomotives along with its technology from the US. GE modified its C36-7 and supplied the locos in two batches, known as ND5 in China. A few units remain in service with CR Shenyang nowadays.
