Turning away from the playa of the Smoke Creek Desert at Sano, the rails of Western Pacific's Fifth Subdivision (today Union Pacific's Winnemucca Sub) start up the east side of Sand Pass. Highlighting the route, with over 13K feet and 20K tons, a westbound North Platte, Nebraska to Fresno, California manifest makes the climb to Sand Pass.
